Celebrity Can’t Cook Challenge, Jamie vs Gordon: You Decide!

27 Apr

And the winner is…. Jamie’s Cauliflower Fritters with 57% of the vote. Thanks to everyone who voted, it looks like I’m going to be playing with a pan of hot fat this week. You are harsh.
Wish me luck!

Finally, an election you can believe in…

From now on (well until I burn the kitchen down) I shall regularly be asking you to vote on which tricky dish I should attempt next in my new Celebrity Can’t Cook Challenge.
Yes, I plan to pit the worlds greatest chefs against each other. Using me as the medium.

As a self-confessed terrible cook I am going to pick recipes from famous books (I have loads) and attempt to recreate them. Alice style.
BUT you will get to vote on which recipe I choose.
First up is:
Gordon Ramsay’s Lancashire Hotpot – from Great British Pub Food
Jamie Oliver’s Curried Cauliflower Fritters – from Jamie At Home

I know, it’s exciting right?

Cast your vote here:

Those tricky fritters need battering and deep frying. Something I have NEVER done.
And that naughty Hotpot looks like a lot of work. It also includes offal….
Whichever dish garners the most votes after a week I will cook.
Exactly as set out in the book. All by myself.

Power to the people.

What a brilliant idea! lol Can’t wait to see what happens, whichever one you try. (I voted for the hotpot, because I love them!). 🙂

Darling, I quite fancy these fritters, can’t wait to hear all about it.

Claire! Am already a bit worried. Thanks for voting though, wish me luck xx

Great idea love, we voted fritters-they look gorgeous and I have faith in your ability to recreate the picture in every detail. Me and John are currently in Brunei Airport on the way back from Oz. We are surrounded by chicken curry (and ham for the vegetarians). Sitting next to a shop called ‘chocolate home’ – can you make one of those? See you soon love. Tony. X

      Chocolate Home?
      We should move in.
Welcome back to the UK – can’t wait to see you for more eating and drinking.

Thanks for voting – will let you know how I get on xxx

Oh lovely…honestly I think neither! Not that I dont want to enter into the spirit of your….erm challenge which I think is a fab idea… but both recipes have the potential to turn into a big fatty mass! However I shall look forward to the results…

    • Tina 28/04/2012 at 1:48 pm #

I think avoid the offal….choose fritters and stock up on triple layer kitchen towel!

      • Alice Can't Cook 30/04/2012 at 1:35 pm #

A big fatty mess? Ah you know this blog well my love!!!
I know I know, in fact not sure I could do either of them well.
But thanks for reading, will let you know what happens x

What an excellent idea! A great blog I’ve really enjoyed reading, I shall be revisiting to find out the results 🙂 Hot pot got my vote just because the weather’s been so foul and it looked really nice and comforting. I’m not normally a Gordon fan though…

Hello Georgia! Great to hear from you, thanks for reading and voting.
Someone on Twitter called Gordon Gorgon the other day which made me laugh a lot!

What a lovely blog you have – will read more.
      Keep in touch. xx

I have to say I voted for the fritters because they are one of my favourites ways of cooking courgettes. Best of luck! Can’t wait to see which one you cook!

    • Alice Can't Cook 09/05/2012 at 10:44 am #

Thanks for that! It looks like the fritters have won… xx

Alice – I fear for your safety with the deep frying, which is why I’ve voted for the hotpot. If you do end up deep frying please remember the following:
On no account throw water into hot fat or oil, even if its on fire. It will send hot fat [and if alight, flames] everywhere.
If things do start to burn, turn off the heat and cover the pan – with a lid if you have one [and you are going to have a lid handy now aren’t you Alice?] or a damp towel if not. anything that excludes the air so it will stop burning.
Don’t try to pick up the pan and get it outside – even if it is on fire.
If its all got horribly out of control grab child and dog [no, that doesn’t leave a hand free for the wine I know, but hey – life is like that sometime;-}] get the hell out of there and dial 999.
Oh – and if you do burn yourself use cold running water to dispel the heat – human flesh, like food, carries on cooking whilst its hot. Horrible thought I know…

Will be watching the skyline anxiously until i know this experiment is completed…

The idea of the hot fat swung it for me. Tricky, dangerous… so I voted for the fritters.

      • Alice Can't Cook 09/05/2012 at 10:45 am #

Cheers Dan – yeah all that hot fat is a great idea 🙂 x

Julia I am a bit scared too. And no I didn’t think about having a lid – thanks for that I will make sure I have one handy. Why does everyone else know about these things?

Hopefully you won’t see the sky above Hove on fire! Wish me luck xx
